We exult that the web is free from any control—or that’s what we tell ourselves—and we are free to put any sort of information up, from the good, to the bad, to the ugly, and it can get really ugly. Caveat emptor ! Let those who search the web beware. But the fact of the matter is that the web is controlled, and rather well. It’s controlled by those who make its tools and by those who construct its indexes and use it for returns on investment. This isn’t necessarily bad, but it can be; and in some cases, it impedes what can be found, by whom and when.

But I would argue that before the web, we developed the knowledge base, perhaps not always linearly but certainly fully, and we always knew we weren’t there yet. I’m not so sure any more that we understand this when we look at the web. The fact that some say we no longer need libraries is a good clue that some think we are already there. If everything really is miscellaneous, then perhaps there isn’t a base of knowledge, just a morass of data, of information, made up of the good, the bad and the ugly.

In that way it is much like everything else in the world, including libraries. Libraries are wonderful repositories, but as we shall see in the third part of this book, they have their own inherent problems. Can’t we all just get along, as the late Rodney Strong once famously said? Apparently not. 24 I would add that the web has brought us as much bad as it has good. While it has made access to information, data, easier, it has also made more complex our lives in dealing with that data, trying to find out what it means, and keeping ourselves private to any extent at all.
