From this wardrobe, I chose tones and patterns that would add to the hyper—“over the top” look I was after. Finally, I added a guitar as a prop to help tie the picture together. Because of the lighting I wanted to use, and because I was not sure that all three band members would be available at the same time, I decided to shoot each separately.
And prior to making his portrait, Tom and I agreed that he would style his hair in a traditional Maori manner and wear a boldly patterned shirt from his New Zealand homeland. I used two small, electronically linked, portable flashes and the ambient light present from the sky and from the parking lot’s lights for this shoot. My main, or key, light was a Nikon portable flash. After covering its head with amber gel to warm its light a bit, I mounted it on an eight-foot stand and positioned it at camera right and about six feet from Tom.
