But when he realized that women’s cosmetics and hair products were more lucrative businesses, Overton began to create 27 28 cosmetics especially for the complexions of African American women. In 1911, at the age of forty-seven, Overton moved his business operations to Chicago. Within nine months, his company grew into a multimillion-dollar business employing more than four hundred people. The Overton Hygienic Products Company became one of the nation’s top producers of African American cosmetics.

Malone faced hard times between 1943 and 1951, with several lawsuits filed against her to claim excise taxes. Her failure to pay real estate taxes led to the sale of most of the Poro property. By 1950, the government had control of the Poro empire. Annie Turnbo Malone died in Chicago’s Provident Hospital on May 10, 1957, of a stroke. She was eighty-seven years old. At the time of her death, her fortune had been depleted to $100,000. As a testament to her life’s work, thirty-two Poro College branches still were in operation in the United States at that time.

Mason and her three daughters walked across the hot desert that lay between Utah and California. Along the trail, she met Charles and Elizabeth Flake Rowan. Unlike Mason and her daughters, the Rowans were free blacks. They encouraged her to sue for freedom because California was a free state, not a slave state like Mississippi. When Mason arrived in California, she met Charles Owens, a successful African American businessman who would become Mason’s son-in-law. Owens helped her petition the Los Angeles district court for her freedom.
