On 1 November 1940 the unit became 55 OTU — the first to be renumbered in the new series. The Defiants and Blenheims were then handed to 54 OTU. With increasing numbers of Spitfires to hand, it moved to Usworth in Northumberland on 14 March 1941, using Ouston as a satellite airfield. A further move was later made to Annan, with Longtown and then Great Orton as satellites. In early 1944 the unit became a Day Pilot Holding Unit, but very shortly afterwards (on 26 January) it was redesignated 4 TEU, remaining at Annan.
